Lower Eyelid Lift

Sometimes, lower eyelid skin loses the elasticity and firmness of youth. When loose skin is combined with excess adipose tissue, puffy and unattractive 'bags' can form.

Although, sagging lower eyelids is a common feature of old age, other factors such as long-term exposure to strong sunlight, stress and lack of sleep can also contribute to a decline in the elasticity of the skin. This means that even relatively young people can suffer from puffiness. Although most people are very distressed because of the aesthetic consequences of having excess skin on their lower eyelid, the stretched skin under the eyelids can lead to some clients experiencing physically unpleasant sensations.

Using a cosmetic surgical procedure, it is possible to reduce the consequences of the loss of skin elasticity on the lids, and to create a more youthful and fresher-looking appearance for the client. In some cases, a lower blepharoplasty can also be achieved with the use of laser radiation, making the procedure even safer and less invasive.

Before the operation

Before performing a lower blepharoplasty, a detailed consultation with the client is essential. In the context of this conversation, the patient has the opportunity to explain all of his or her requirements, while the attending physician presents an appropriate course of treatment.

The eyelid

The surgical treatment is usually carried out under local anaesthetic, which is injected under the eyelid. The course of the operation is then tailored to the specific requirements of the individual.

If the tissues of the eyelid reveal higher grade symptoms of exhaustion, for example, a horizontal incision is made through the skin and eyelid muscles. After the removal of excess fat and skin tissue, the muscles are ultimately re-attached to the bone shell.

If there is only a small amount of puffiness that is associated with only moderate sagging tissue, the adipose tissue removal can also be done from direction of the nose. This can be achieved using cutting edge laser technology. This method of treatment does not affect the eyelid muscle- the focus is solely on the removal of excess fat and skin tissue.

If a client is suffering from a very severe sagging of the lower lid, a so-called canthopexy may be necessary. This is where the lid margin or outer canthus is stabilized, while a fixation of involved muscles are attached to the periosteum of the orbit. Fixing plaster is frequently to suture the wound area.

After the operation

An immediate postoperative cooling of the eye area prevents any swelling. A complication-free operation means that any medical tape can be removed after about four days.

In general, clients are encouraged to take it easy physically for a few days after the operation. Avoiding sudden head movements and exposure to direct sunlight is of vital importance.

Driving after the procedure is not permitted for twenty four hours, so it is important that the client has made suitable travel arrangements in advance.

Treatment success

The vast majority of people who undergo surgery to their lower eyelid are very satisfied with the results, and the improvement to their appearance. The final success of the treatment can be judged after a few months. Any excess skin that returns after a few years can be countered by a freshening operation.

Risks and side effects

Swelling and bruising in the operating area are a short-term effect of the procedure. Toothaches are a rare side-effect. Other potential risks of the lower eyelid lift are inflammation, wound healing problems and allergic reactions. During the procedure, there is a tiny possibility of injury to the eye.
