An enlargement of the labia after extreme weight fluctuations or pregnancy, or simply your own aesthetic sensitivity, can awaken the desire for a correction of the labia. Labia that are too large or too long can also interfere with sport (e.g. cycling, horse riding), or when wearing tight-fitting trousers.

Functional impairment during intercourse may be a further motive to have this procedure. The folding in of oversized labia during intercourse can cause severe pain. Labia reduction, or partial/complete removal of the labia, exposes the clitoris and can therefore increase stimulation and the ability to achieve orgasm for women who experience difficulties in this area.

The first step in the process is always an individual consultation and a detailed explanatory discussion. If you have opted for this procedure, you must consider the following guidelines in advance:

Smokers should refrain from smoking for several weeks before and after the operation, as this interferes with wound healing Anticoagulant medication such as Aspirin® or Marcumar® must also be stopped in consultation with your doctor. Ideally your genital area should be completely shaved in order to minimise the risk of infection.

During a labia reduction procedure, excess skin and/or mucous membranes on the labia minor are removed and the incisions closed with fine, dissolvable sutures.

Precise knowledge of the incision procedure is important, and the type of incision must be selected in each individual case to ensure a perfect result. Ideally, the operation is carried out under a short, gentle sedation. Treatment under local anaesthetic is possible but tends to be uncomfortable and is therefore not recommended. Labia correction is essentially an uncomplicated and relatively low-risk procedure when carried out by an experienced surgeon. The operation takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. The operation can be combined with other procedures, e.g. injections to the pubic mound or, conversely, liposuction and contouring. Ask your doctor about the available options.

You can return home after the procedure and a subsequent rest period of 1-2 hours. You should arrange to be collected after an outpatient procedure. After 24 hours, the intimate area should be washed gently without any soap. You will also be provided with ointment for the wound and a 5-day course of antibiotics as a preventive measure. After a few days, the initial slight pain will disappear and the post-operative swelling should have almost completely subsided. You should not have sexual intercourse for the first four weeks, and during this period you should also avoid sports such as horse riding, cycling, jogging, as well as sauna visits, to avoid placing excessive strain on the unhealed wound.

In most cases the success of the treatment manifests itself as a significant improvement in the aesthetic appearance. After approximately three weeks the effects of the procedure are generally no longer particularly noticeable. However, a definitive statement about the success of the treatment is only possible after several months. The results do not always correspond with the patient's expectations and wishes. Therefore it is important to have an extensive discussion with the doctor before the procedure.

The procedure frequently causes haematoma and swelling, but only rarely severe pain. These side effects almost always disappear within days or weeks. Bleeding and secondary bleeding may occur, sometimes underneath the skin. An additional surgical procedure may be required to stop the bleeding, or to drain the blood. A feeling of tightness may sometimes remain. Infections and inflammations, wound healing disorders, excessive scarring and nerve damage with a feeling of numbness may also occur.

It is not always possible to prevent adverse functional or cosmetic effects. Allergic reactions of varying degrees of severity are also possible. Healing is usually complete after approximately 4 weeks. Asymmetry can result after the swelling has receded but this is normally neither problematic nor noticeable.
