What is Cosmelan?

How it works
The Cosmelan peel treatment is based on inhibiting tyrosinase, a basic enzyme in melanin production. The Cosmelan formula contains inhibiting substances, enabling it to block this enzyme. The ingredients include azelaic acid, phytic acid, kojic acid and vitamin C.
Treatment
The Cosmelan peel consists of a 30-minute practical treatment followed by a course of home care. During outpatient treatment the specialist will start by thoroughly cleansing the skin before applying a degreasing solution. A mask of Cosmelan 1 cream is then applied to the entire treatment area. This mask remains on the patient's face for a specified period of time. It takes between 5 and 10 hours for the mask to take effect. You will be given detailed care instructions to take home with you. It is essential that you follow these instructions carefully. Cosmelan 2 and Hydra Vital K creams should also be applied as directed. A noticeable improvement to the skin should be observed approximately 4-5 days after starting treatment. Here in the clinic we offer an additional thorough skin cleansing procedure to remove dead skin cells and oily residue.
The length of time required for the cream to work effectively depends upon the patient's skin type. The depigmentation treatment is then supported by Cosmelan 2 cream. This ensures that the depigmentation treatment continues to be effective. Treatment takes place up to three times a day during the first week, twice a day during the second week, before reducing to once a day from the third week onwards. A break can be taken during the Cosmelan 2 phase.
Important information
You will be required to wear a visible mask for several hours after the Cosmelan 1 phase of treatment. You should therefore schedule your treatment so that you can return home immediately afterwards.
